Yes, it's an informal term. CMYK black is a dark blackish grey, as you know, and the term "dense" just means turning the dull flat cmyk black into an interesting version of black. A general purpose spec might be simply 100k overprinting 70c. In the old days this was known as putting a "shiner" tint under the black.
This is K-only black, 0-0-0-K. The problem with that is that black ink has rather low density, resulting in flat images lacking "punch". Rich black uses all four plates to produce a much deeper black. CMYK profiles have a built-in total ink limit. If you exceed that ink limit, you get smearing and drying problems.

Lukas Engqvist. Community Expert , Aug 11, 2019. In Acrobat Pro the simplest is to use Convert Colours under Prepress tools. You can choose to convert text objects only and Keep Black and Promote CMYK-K to Balck. Also converting to a greyscale profile will also convert to black.

So the simplest way to ensure the richest possible black is to work in RGB and convert at the very end to whatever destination CMYK is required. Then 0-0-0 is converted to max ink, which is a bit higher, but the deepest black possible within TAC.
Seems crazy to me, but I have a print house that is requesting a "jpeg file, 100% black at 1200 ppi." (It is to be used with a foil stamping machine for a linen book cover.) When I export the InDesign file (black text only) to jpeg, the eyedropper shows a rich black CMYK mix (not 100% black) whether I export to grey or CMYK.
I have been trying to create a "Rich Black" swatch to use with my Adobe Illustrator creations, but after a lot of online research, I find that there are many diffrent opinions out there. I figure I start this discussion, so that all of the information that we all share, can be available for a lot of Adobe users on this forum.
To remedy the lack of deep blacks, the printer suggested that I use Rich Black (CMYK = 30% 30% 30% 100%) rather than Standard Black. I understand how to create a Rich Black swatch in InDesign and apply it to something like a solid black background, but I don't really understand how to apply that swatch to my photographs.
About "Rich Black": It's become common to misuse the term "rich black" when referring to black that was intended to be 100%K, but somehow inadvertently entered the realm of RGB at some point, and is now reconverted to CMYK with values something like 69.5%C, 67.2%M, 63.7%Y, 73.8%K. This is not rich black.
However in 2018 with Acrobat Pro DC there is a new option, a default fixup is provided to map colour from rich black to black only: They are very similar to each other, both require source colour values and a tolerance value (fuzziness factor) to pickup and change the required colour.
