Monument Road. The US purchased 12,580 square feet of land on the south side of Monument Road on May 25, 1932, and spent $5,625 to erect a red brick border station, which saw little traffic. This crossing was about 2000 feet north of Monument #1, which marks the beginning of the land border between the US and Canada.

The highway is one of the major backbones of a network in the Great Lakes region, connecting the populous Quebec City–Windsor corridor with Michigan, New York and central Ontario's cottage country. [13] It is the principal connection between Toronto and Montreal, becoming Autoroute 20 at the Ontario–Quebec border. [14]
It is one of the two major connections between Montreal and Quebec City, the other being Autoroute 20 on the south shore of the St. Lawrence. Autoroute 40 is currently 347 km (215.6 mi) long. Between the Ontario–Quebec boundary and the interchange with Autoroute 25, the route is signed as part of the Trans-Canada Highway .

The Derby Line–Stanstead Border Crossing is a border crossing station on the Canada–United States border, connecting the towns of Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont. It connects Main Street ( U.S. Route 5) in Derby Line with Quebec Route 143 in Stanstead.
The St. Lawrence River runs 3,058 kilometres (1,900 mi) from the farthest headwater to the mouth and 1,197 km (743.8 mi) from the outflow of Lake Ontario. These numbers include the estuary; without the estuary, the length from Lake Ontario is c. 500 km (c. 300 mi). The farthest headwater is the North River in the Mesabi Range at Hibbing, Minnesota.
