Between hotels, museum entries (pre-booked and walk-in), restaurants, trains, taxis, and miscellaneous shopping, I probably was able to use my AMEX about 75% of time.
632 posts. janet...in the 60's the Spanish Steps became a hangout for the traveling Americans (including lots of long haired hippies) because of the Amex office...you could get your mail, change money or buy travelers checks there, or make travel arrangements (and if you had an Amex bank account, which I did, you could cash checks there easily).

AE will be accept at higher end establishments especially five star hotels and fine restaurants but for the most part it is a dead card. Also believe that the currency conversion fees on AE are high. You would be better served with VISA or MasterCard.
05/16/09 05:36 PM. 345 posts. Actually, Rick already posted that the AMEX office in Florence closed on his website (under guidebook updates) earlier this year. A lot of financial service companies cut back on their branches/services last fall and winter. Everyone should keep that in mind before they travel this year.

My guess is you will be able to log in. But if that doesnt work simply google "Vueling airlines contact phone number" I just did and here it is: 011 34 931 51 81 58 Customer service. Call them. Yes someone will speak English. If you have an E ticket sent to you by Vueling you have a place on that flight.
Check with AmEx to make sure their additional insurance covers Spain. We used AmEx in France for primary coverage at $18 for the entire rental (signed up for the coverage in advance) We often rent in spain and rely upon the visa card insurance to cover this issue.
We have American Express card and learned about their Premium Car Rental insurance which is a lot cheaper, $17.95 (we are from California) for the entire rental period. Seems to cover more too? Sounds too good to be true?! But does not include tires? Does anyone have experience with actually having to file a claim with American Express?

The debit card must be funded and the company alerted that you will be out of country. It is designed to work internationally without hassle and Schwab refunds most fees you might encounter at ATMs. (My post-Scotland statement shows zero transaction fees.) Easily researched, this card ranks high with travelers.
