When Walt goes to unlock the bike lock after piecing together the broken plate upstairs, there's a close-up shot of Krazy 8 slowly reaching for the missing plate piece in his pocket, which Walt notices, and is why he asks 8 if he intends on attacking him with it after he sets him free.
Walt had killed Krazy-8's cousin Emilio, and had all but killed Krazy-8 with the phosphine gas. However Walt was not at this point a ruthless killer, he had improvised the gas as a way of escaping from what was increasingly looking like a fatal situation for Jesse and himself.
Walt weighs the pros and cons of killing Krazy-8, then collapses on the basement floor while bringing him a sandwich, shattering the plate. After he regains consciousness, Walt tells Krazy-8 he has lung cancer.
He is unsure of the color to confirm it's meth and concludes Krazy-8, who had been their snitch, has been killed. Meanwhile, Walt has called in sick at work and parks his Pontiac Aztek on the shoulder of a freeway overpass, resuming his flashback to discussing human chemistry with his lab partner.
Walt has no option but to reveal to Krazy-8 and Emilio his meth formula in exchange for his life. However, Walt shows his best chemistry teacher skills by tricking the duo into a deadly vapor that knocks Krazy-8 out and kills Emilio.
The tragedy of Krazy-8's death resonated with fans in season 1 of Breaking Bad after his heart-to-heart with Walter in which the audience learned about his family and his father, but Krazy-8's murder becomes even sadder now that fans of Better Call Saul know he wasn't even a real rat.
