In Codenames: Deep Undercover, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin.
Each word in Codenames has 2 or more associations and can mean different things. I'm not sure the game works that well with just random words, as there are less associations. Just don't want anyone to get the wrong impression of the game from playing a version that doesn't contain the actual words included in the game.
Codenames can be just as easy to access for gamers as it is for dinner guests that have never really played tabletop games before. That makes it a highly valuable game to have on the shelf as it can adapt to almost any group of people you have over, from work colleagues to family functions, to game days.
