The Newburyport Harbor Light, also known as Plum Island Light, built in 1788, is a historic lighthouse on Northern Boulevard in Newburyport, Massachusetts. [ 2 ][ 3 ] The original 4th order Fresnel lens is still in use, one of only five original glass Fresnel lenses still in use in Massachusetts.
Plum Island Light is located on the western end of Plum Island, which lies in the Long Island Sound, east of Orient Point at the end of the North Fork of Long Island, New York. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] An historic granite lighthouse originally built in 1869 sits at the site, but no longer serves as an active aid to navigation.
Plum Island is a barrier beach sheltering the Plum Island River, Plum Island Sound, and the mouths of the Parker, Rowley, Eagle Hill and Ipswich rivers. The entire area between the islands and the mainland is grassland laced with tidal creeks. At high tide the grassland is entirely submerged, in some places by only a few inches of water.
