After that, "Learn to code" was used 1) as a meme phrase attempting to parody the narrative and 2) in continuation of the "everyone should learn to code" movement. When this new thing came around, the miner articles were the first to get brought up and correlated with the "media telling people to code", which was an easy and well-established ...

One of the biggest controversies around this meme involved laid-off journalists from BuzzFeed and Huffington Post experiencing a coordinated harassment campaign on Twitter, with tons of people responding to all of their aggrieved tweets saying "learn to code" as if those journalists were seriously suggesting that learning to code was a perfect ...

When "learn to code" is meant as an answer to "I can't find a job," it is a particularly absurd and harmful meme, essentially a non-ironic 21st century version of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." It is bad/non advice that doesn't help anyone and merely deflects from an inhuman lack of concern for your peers.

During the Obama years, coal miners and other blue collar workers who lost their jobs were told by left-leaning outlets like Huffington Post to "learn to code." Never mind that coding jobs were already being outsourced at the time, and entry level positions were scarce and low-paying.

I was stuck in a boring office job with no prospects when the 'learn to code' path was being push. I was desperate. I never even really liked computers, but it seemed like the key to a better life, so I fell for it. Now my life is endless sprints, being on call, 'delivering value for the business owners', being expected to live and breathe code ...

While that message may seem innocuous, the nature of 4chan meant that anyone receiving messages saying “learn to code” online was shot through with anti-Semitism, racism, and general hate. This is poisoning the well. The "learn to code" meme, even if it was started by 4chan, is not inherently racist just because there are racists on 4chan.

But I do remember the coal mining meme about learning to code and I thought it was pretty funny nonetheless. But I think learning to code is more along the lines of learning a trade if one adopts it. Just like others have gone to do other trades electrician, plumber, air craft mechanic, welder etc.

It became a joke. A few years ago, a bunch of “journalists” were writing articles about industries like coal getting shut down and leaving a lot of people jobless, so the out of work coal miners should learn how to code. Imagine saying “Just learn to code, bro” to someone who worked in a completely different industry for decades.
