Suffolk (locally / ˈsʌfʊk / SUF-uuk) is an independent city in Virginia, United States. As of 2020, the population was 94,324. [ 4 ] It is the 10th-most populous city in Virginia, the largest city in Virginia by boundary land area as well as the 14th-largest in the country. [ 5 ] Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
Suffolk became an incorporated town in Nansemond County in 1808. As part of Virginia, it sided with the Confederacy in the American Civil War. From May 12, 1862, to July 3, 1863, the town was occupied by 25,000 Union troops under Major General John J. Peck. Peck made his headquarters in the Greek revival house now called "Riddick's Folly".
In 1863 Luitenant General James Longstreet was placed in command of the Confederate Department of Virginia and North Carolina. Longstreet was given four objectives: (1) to protect Richmond, (2) give support to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia if and when needed, (3) forage and gather supplies for the Confederate armies, (4) to capture the Union garrison at Suffolk if possible.
