Late 12th century-16th century. Gothic art was a style of medieval art that developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD, led by the concurrent development of Gothic architecture. It spread to all of Western Europe, and much of Northern, Southern and Central Europe, never quite effacing more classical styles in Italy.
The Gothic style first appeared in France in the mid-12th century in an Abbey, St Denis Basilica, built by Abbot Suger (1081–1151). The old Basilica was the traditional burial place of Saint Denis, and of the Kings of France, and was also a very popular pilgrimage destination, so much so that pilgrims were sometimes crushed by the crowds.
Century Gothic is a digital sans-serif typeface in the geometric style, released by Monotype Imaging in 1990. [ 1][ 2] It is a redrawn version of Monotype's own Twentieth Century, a copy of Bauer's Futura, to match the widths of ITC Avant Garde Gothic. It is an exclusively digital typeface that has never been manufactured as metal type .
International Gothic. International Gothic is a period of Gothic art which began in Burgundy, France, and northern Italy in the late 14th and early 15th century. In France, Gothic book illustration began around 1200, [ 4] almost four decades after the first early Gothic cathedrals were built. In England, this change in style began around 1220, [ 2] while in Germany, Romanesque forms persisted partially until about 1300. [ 5] The change of style in painting was always preceded by that in architecture.
