The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge extends to the foot of Bar Hill on the southern side of Stage Island Pool; that is, the pool is not in the state park. Stage Island is part of the refuge. The trail on state land along the southern half of the pool, which follows the old salt-works road, is continued in the refuge on the northern side.
