  2. Joint compound vs spackle?? - DIY Home Improvement Forum

Spackle is for filling small holes and/or divots in drywall. It is generally a lot softer than joint compound. DO NOT USE SPACKLE TO FIX CRACKS. You want to use paper tape or fibafuse tape and some quick setting jc that comes in powder form that you mix with water. Use that for your first coat and pre-mixed for subsequent coats.

I used to think that Joint Compound and Spackle were interchangable. I just read somewhere that Spackle should be used for small holes, Nail holes etc, and JC for larger applications. I have a wall that needs a "skim coat" to even it out for painting.

Joint compound enables me to work at a slower pace. I'm sure spackle is much more durable but for me, joint compound is the better choice. I forgot to mention that when I'm in a rush, I use my wife's hairdryer to speed the drying time of joint compound! It does speed the drying time significantly. Bob.

Some spackling contains vinyl and really isn't all that sandable when it comes to bigger areas. Spackling isn't the correct product to use anyway. Spackling is basically for repairing nail holes and small dings and maybe a tiny crack but it certainly isn't to be used as a production product. Go get some Durabond "Forty-Five" or "Ninety" minute ...

Cut a 3" square hole, add 2 1x2 at a time with a screw in the middle (to control/center) to stack them on edge behind the drywall resting on the lower header board for hardware fasteners. With a few inches extra on each side of your opening to spread the load against good existing drywall.

MTN REMODEL LLC. This is a matter of convenience, not what you "should" do with the mud. Clearly, mud is cheap, and yet the way some people apply it and horde it, you'd think it was $99/gallon. So reusing bad stuff makes about as much sense as pulling a nail out of old 2x4s to reuse them.

It sets by chemical reation due to the plaster of paris in it in the alloted time in minutes; 20, 45, 90, 120. It is really good for first coats on unfinished drywall as it dries harder and quicker than normal joint compound giving you a stronger joint and allows for second coating most times the same day.

  9. fill wood...wood putty or drywall mud!? - DIY Home Improvement...

YES, At first glance it sounds silly. Wood putty is made to fill wood. Drywall mud is for drywall. BUT...my experiences with wood putty is that it is expensive, dries slow, hard to spread, difficult to sand. This is for interior chair rail. I got some cherry chair rail for free...but it has many gouges and even some cracks I need to repair.

Forget about the spackle as the crack will return quickly. To repair these cracks, I like to open them up slightly clean out any loose debris, put down a strip of fiberglass mesh tape, one coat of 20min mud to set the tape and two coats of joint compound to finish, let dry, sand and paint. Regular ready mix joint compound [bucket or box] is water soluble so if any moisture came thru the block it would dissolve the j/c making it weak and/or fall off.
