mimibusybee. If you have access to Costco car rental, you can do cancellable booking, unlimited miles. You pick the car you actually want with the company you prefer. There is also pickup nearby instead of airport. You need Costco membership card to book, but I have never been asked to show card at pickup.
Do NOT book rental vehicles thru Kayak. We tried it on a trip to LA and Kayak produced a search result with what we wanted… so I paid, including for insurance, but the rental office was miles from the airport, closed when we arrived, and no one picked up the phone on the help line. We went to enterprise booked and paid full price for a car.
Kayak is a good aggregator to start with, but your best best is to go the CR rental sites directly for a better idea of prices and availability. Edit: Adding cost details. The rental is for a compact SUV for 11 days in June. Typical prices through Costco and DHCR are ~1,400 to 1,500. The one through credit card is ~950 (refundable) but with Dollar (where I have no status). The one through Kayak is ~850 (non refundable) but with Hertz where I can possibly use my presidential circle ...
1-Insurance is going to cost 2-3 times the rate of your rental. It is mandatory. I always get complete coverage. The roads are not kept up to par with the US. I think it is worth the peace of mind. BTW-I never buy insurance domestically. 2-Count on spending an hour+ renting the car.
Are the prices for small car rentals on Kayak, Orbitz, etc accurate? 10$ per day, unlimited miles, not much in the way of extra fees? Specifically one way rentals to Florida from New York. Even with optional boxes checked, comes out to like 150$ for a week rental?
Sometimes you can get a lower price or better flexibility or better guarantees with the 3d party than with the rental co itself. Rented a Jeep for 81$ a day and had a great weekend hiking in the mountains. You can pick whatever vehicle you want locally and it’s usually cheaper than any rental place. They will even deliver or let you drop off somewhere else for an extra fee. Pretty sweet option for a weird situation like yours.
