The majority of songs are covers which Cash performs in his own sparse style, with help from producer Rick Rubin.For instance, for the song "Personal Jesus", Rubin asked Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to re-work an acoustic version of Martin Gore's song, which featured a simple acoustic riff that stripped down the song to a blues style.
Unearthed is a box set by American country singer Johnny Cash. It was released by American Recordings on November 25, 2003, two months after Cash's death. The album was compiled by Cash and Rick Rubin, who also produced the set. It was certified Gold on December 2, 2004, by the Recording Industry Association of America. [2]
The Johnny Cash Museum, located in one of Cash's properties in Hendersonville until 2006, dubbed the House of Cash, was sold based on Cash's will. Prior to this, having been closed for a number of years, the museum had been featured in Cash's music video for "Hurt". The house subsequently burned down during the renovation by the new owner.
Two songs on the album had been recorded by Cash previously: "Delia's Gone," for the 1962 album The Sound of Johnny Cash and "Oh, Bury Me Not," for 1965's Johnny Cash Sings the Ballads of the True West. The album cover was photographed while Cash was visiting Australia, at Werribee near Melbourne. [7]
The album's cover art was created by Jack Davis. Cash would reprise a number of the tracks on this album in later venues such as TV performances, and live versions of " Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog " and "Joe Bean" would be featured on his later live album At Folsom Prison .
