After the sinking of ELLI in the port of Tinos on 15-08-1940 by the Italian submarine Delfino, the Hellenic Navy General Staff decided to move towards the first stages of war. The basic tactic chosen by the navy was the confrontation of every attack made by the enemy until the arrival of the English fleet in the area.

The Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff participates as member in the Defence Council’s meetings and he is also a member – with the right of vote – of the Council of the Chiefs General Staff. He chairs the Supreme Naval Council.
HNHS /1 was established in 1997 and operates the AB-212 ASW. At its inception it originally consisted of AB-212ASW, AB-212EW and Alouette III helicopters. AB-212EW and Alouette III helicopters were decommissioned in 2004 and 2013 respectively.
The destroyer “Psara” (D-98) was sank fighting on April 20th 1941,Easterday, attacked by German dive bombers in the Golf of Megara, where she was anchored with the rest of the fleet. Total losses: 37 crew members, Sailors and Petty Officers.
