German grammar. German sentence structure is the structure to which the German language adheres. German is an OV (Object-Verb) language. [ 1] Additionally, German, like all west Germanic languages except English, uses V2 word order, though only in independent clauses. In dependent clauses, the finite verb is placed last.

The general word order was subject–object–verb: objects preceded their verbs, and genitives and adjectives preceded the nouns they modified. That is shown most clearly in early inscriptions such as on the golden horns of Gallehus in which the verb is placed last in the sentence. Prepositions could be placed either before or after their clause.
