A lot of the small briggs mower engines works exactly as Gary mentioned, as the compression release is ground into the camshaft. I monitor the performance and condition of several Briggs I/C Quantum engines that have a compression release ground into the camshaft.

I have a Briggs and Stratton model 23 with gear reduction on a log splitter and need to replace the motor. I believe the model 23 is 9 horse power with a 6 to 1 gear reduction. What horse power should I get to replace the model 23 to have similiar horse power and torque. I know a modern 9 horse is not the same motor as the old cast iron briggs.

It is a model 990-100 and serial number 3062590B. All it took to get running was cleaning and adjusting the points and a new spark plug. The engine is very similar to the 498 series engine. The 990 model uses a intake manifold where the 498 engine has the carb bolting right on the cylinder block.
