The USDA's Honor Awards is a tradition dating back to 1947 and represents the highest awards granted by the Secretary to an individual or group for contribution or achievement in support of the Department's mission. Since 2018, the traditional honor awards program has been redesigned into a three-tier structure: Tier 3: Secretary's Honor Awards
Awards will be made only to recognize single acts of heroism or bravery. This award is not presented in recognition of activities or conflict with an armed enemy. The situation must have involved personal hazard or danger and the voluntary risk of life. Awards are not made solely for saving a life.
Certain other civil decorations may be authorized for wear on U.S. military uniforms, upon approval of the military service departments. Each of the military branches also maintains their own series of civil decorations separate from military awards. The following is a listing of articles pertaining to United States civil awards and decorations.
Furthermore, the U.S. Army mandates that all unit awards will be worn separate from individual awards on the opposite side of a military uniform. The Army is the only service to require this separation between unit and individual decorations. All Army unit awards are worn enclosed in a gold frame.
