Hong Kong Island ( Chinese: 香港島; Jyutping: Hoeng1 gong2 dou2; Cantonese Yale: Hēunggóng dóu) is an island in the southern part of Hong Kong. The island, known originally and on road signs simply as "Hong Kong", had a population of 1,289,500 and a population density of 16,390 per square kilometre (42,400/sq mi), [ 2] as of 2023.
In the evening of 7 September 2023, a heavy rainstorm struck the city of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta area, including parts of Guangdong, China and Macau. The record rainfall caused widespread flooding and landslides in the cities, four dead and dozens injured. [ 4][ 5]
It is the easternmost outlying island of Hong Kong. Tung Ping Chau is a popular holiday destination for locals. Its attractions, such as wave erosion landscape, the shale that resembles a sponge cake structure and the unusually flat lay of the island itself, draw thousands of visitors annually.

Covering an area of 91.5 hectares (226 acres) in Wong Chuk Hang , it is the largest theme park by area in Hong Kong, and is also the city's second oldest theme park, after the now-defunct Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park .
