From July 2005, Channel 4 included a daily Sudoku game in their teletext service. On August 2, the BBC's program guide Radio Times featured a weekly Super Sudoku with a 16×16 grid. In the United States, the first newspaper to publish a Sudoku puzzle by Wayne Gould was The Conway Daily Sun (New Hampshire), in 2004.
A Sudoku whose regions are not (necessarily) square or rectangular is known as a Jigsaw Sudoku. In particular, an N × N square where N is prime can only be tiled with irregular N -ominoes . For small values of N the number of ways to tile the square (excluding symmetries) has been computed (sequence A172477 in the OEIS ). [ 10 ]

Terminology and grid layout. A Sudoku (i.e. the puzzle) is a partially completed grid. A grid has 9 rows, 9 columns and 9 boxes, each having 9 cells (81 total). Boxes can also be called blocks or regions. [ 1] Three horizontally adjacent blocks are a band, and three vertically adjacent blocks are a stack. [ 2]

A standard Sudoku contains 81 cells, in a 9×9 grid, and has 9 boxes, each box being the intersection of the first, middle, or last 3 rows, and the first, middle, or last 3 columns. Each cell may contain a number from one to nine, and each number can only occur once in each row, column, and box.
