there's no way for the converter to figure out which control its applied to so. i'd have to couple the code to the visual element, a pretty bad idea, and animating the control in the converter breaks the Single Responsibility Principle, often a sign that something needs a bit of a think! Maybe i'm approaching this from the wrong angle.

The problem isn't with SSIS - it's the Excel provider. There's no such thing in Excel as "data types". It's not a database. You should probably read up on Douglas Laudenschlager's posts on Excel. They'll tell you a great deal. From the sound of what you tried with the Data Conversion component - it should have worked.

You will need to create a linked server to the excel document and then do your update like this: update Address set [Club-ID]=[Excel].Club-ID] from Address join Excel...[Sheet1$] [Excel] on [Address-ID]=Address.[Address-ID] Assuming the name of your linked server is Excel. The challenge is going to be in setting up this linked server.
