Animated Portable Network Graphics ( APNG) is a file format which extends the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) specification to permit animated images that work similarly to animated GIF files, while supporting 24 or 48-bit images and full alpha transparency not available for GIFs. It also retains backward compatibility with non-animated PNG files.

GIF. The Graphics Interchange Format ( GIF; / ɡɪf / GHIF or / dʒɪf / JIF, see § Pronunciation) is a bitmap image format that was developed by a team at the online services provider CompuServe led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite and released on June 15, 1987. [ 1]
There are 4 basic choices for image file formats : SVG for simple diagrams (especially those that need to be scaled). JPEG for photographic images. GIF for animated images. PNG for everything else. While some formats offer multiple compression systems, in general the format and the compression system are tied together.
Be aware, if the picture was sent in an unsupported file format, such as TIFF, you may not be able to view it. Ask the sender to resend the picture using JPG or GIF file format. Check the attachments. The image sent may have been sent as an attachment rather than an embedded image.
