The island is situated in Gardiners Bay, east of Orient Point, off the eastern end of the North Fork coast of Long Island. Plum Island and its surrounding estuaries are a popular destination for birders. Plum Island Sound is on a migratory route for many varieties of birds, as well as being a nesting area for piping plovers. Much of the beach in the National Wildlife Refuge is closed to visitors during the nesting season, which can last most of the warm months.
Plum Island Light is located on the western end of Plum Island, which lies in the Long Island Sound, east of Orient Point at the end of the North Fork of Long Island, New York. [1] [2] An historic granite lighthouse originally built in 1869 sits at the site, but no longer serves as an active aid to navigation.
