  2. Open- vs. Closed-Cell Spray Foam - GreenBuildingAdvisor

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/open-vs-closed-cell-spray-foam

Two spray foam experts explain their preferences. Different density, different price. Open-cell foam (left) has a density of about 1/2 pound per cubic foot. By volume, it is significantly less expensive than closed-cell foam (right), which has a density of about 2 pounds per cubic foot. Everyone agrees that spray polyurethane foam does a great ...

  3. Does Spray Foam Insulation Off-Gas Poisonous Fumes?

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/does-spray-foam-insulation-off-gas...

Open- or closed-cell spray foam insulation is a great way to get air sealing and insulation in a single step, but the health implications are fuzzy. Spray foam is a great air seal and insulator, but the jury is still out on the health effects of possible fumes. Spray-foam insulation has become a weapon of choice for many builders and homeowners ...

  6. Is Using Closed-Cell Spray Foam Worth the Trade-Offs?

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/is-using-closed-cell-foam-worth-the-trade...

Closed-cell polyurethane spray foam is amazing stuff. It’s a great insulator, with a higher R-value per inch than almost any other commonly available material. (Polyisocyanurate foam can be equivalent, but it varies with product and temperature.) When installed at least an inch or two thick, it essentially blocks water vapor and air movement.

  7. Closed-Cell Spray Foam for Sub-Slab Insulation

The project took two days to install and seal the sub-slab insulation. There are 2 in. of XPS foam under the slab and footings, 2 in. covering the slab edge—cast in place during the concrete pour—and 4 ft. of 2-in. XPS used as a wing for the perimeter foundation insulation. (See the IRC Table R403.3 (1) for local requirements).

  8. Spray Foam Insulation: Open and Closed Cell

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/.../spray-foam-insulation-open-and-closed-cell

Closed-cell spray foam provides a higher R-value per inch (6.5) than less expensive insulation types like cellulose and fiberglass (3.5 to 3.7). Most spray polyurethane foam is called “two-component” foam. Two ingredients—conventionally called “A” and “B” components—are mixed on site using special equipment mounted in a trailer ...

  9. Spray foam against underside of roof deck? Or install vent...

    www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/question/spray-foam-against-underside-roof-deck...

By simple averages and 24" rafter spacing, 8" of closed cell spray foam and 2x10 rafters you get about R33 for the assembly, about R32 with 16" rafter spacing. The thermal bridging does make a big difference in the performance of the overall assembly. No, escaping heat is energy loss, but it won't damage your roof.

  10. Spray Foam Insulated Homes Need Ventilation

An energy-recovery ventilator (right) and a duct distribution box (center) in a spray foam insulated home. Contractors who install spray polyurethane foam insulation put themselves at risk if they do so in homes without a plan for mechanical ventilation. Most installations of spray foam insulation, when properly installed, act as an air barrier.
