Santa Cruz Island (Spanish: Isla Santa Cruz), also known as Indefatigable Island and by other names, is the most populous and second-largest island in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. Situated in the middle of the group, Santa Cruz is a shield volcano with an area of 986 km 2 (381 sq mi) and a maximum altitude of 864 m (2,835 ft).
The largest island is Nendö, which is also known as Santa Cruz Island proper. Lata , located on Nendö, is the largest town, and is the capital of Temotu Province. Other islands belonging to the Santa Cruz group [1] are Vanikoro (which is actually made up of two islands, Banie and its small neighbour Teanu ) and Utupua .
Based on ocean conditions and ferry availability, Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island is the most visited area in the park for day and camping visitors. Camping visitors arrive at Prisoners Harbor on the north shore and stay in the valley beyond. A new island visitor center opened at Scorpion Ranch on Santa Cruz Island on April 6, 2009.
