    "He ate cookies." is past tense. It's an active tense. "He had eaten cookies." is past perfect. It's a passive tense.     I grew up in San Diego near a lot of Golden Delicious orchards in Julian, CA, and as far as I’m concerned, they’re not worth eating except in a pie. We used to pick up a pie every year on the way home from Girl Scout camp at Camp Winacka. The apples raw were mushy and too sweet, in my recollection. I like my apples very crisp and somewhat tart.
