Herb Brooks. Herbert Paul Brooks (August 5, 1937 – August 11, 2003) was an American ice hockey player and coach. His most notable achievement came in 1980 as head coach of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team at Lake Placid.

The 1979–80 Canada men's national ice hockey team represented Canada at the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid in the United States. This was the first men's ice hockey team to compete for Canada at the Olympics since the 1968 Winter Olympics held at Grenoble, France. Canada's team placed sixth in the tournament to finish out of the medals.
