The NYT hints are oftentimes very bad. The three blue cells form a triple, i.e. the three candidates 1, 3 and 9 are locked in place in these three cells. All other cells within the same 3x3 box cannot be 1, 3 or 9 for that reason. We can therefore eliminate the red candidates. 3. 23K subscribers in the sudoku community.

Share. oldenumber77. • 4 yr. ago • Edited 4 yr. ago. NYT Medium are almost always considerably easier than the NYT Hard’s (in my observation). I sometimes do NYT Medium without any notes at all. If a particular NYT Medium seems harder than usual, you probably over-looked a pretty obvious single (naked or hidden) or pair/triple. [Edit ...
I think sudoku is somewhat of an afterthought for the NYT. I mean they give it away for free. Their other games are the real money makers. That still doesn’t explain the oddity, but it’s something to think about. 3. 24K subscribers in the sudoku community. A triple. Therefore you can remove numbers that are not 4,7or8 from cells 3,8,and 9 in column3. This takes away the 2 in column3 cell9, and leaves you with only one 2 in the bottom left box. This opens up a few new solves. For this hidden triple, there is an equal and opposite Quad in column three: 1,2,5,9.
Happy New Year. in 2023 i did the new york times sudoku, hard and medium every day. u/brawkly has inspired me, so this year it will be without notes.
But, I'm trying to find out what are 'goodish' times. For me, easy always under 4 mins, usually around 3:20-3:30, very occasionally 3:00. medium always under 35 mins, usually around 18 mins, occasionally under 15 mins. hard always under 45 mins, usually around 30 mins, occasionally under 20 mins (today for example was 18:39) which is why I ...
So in the beginning it seems to be pretty simple, naked pairs etc. So start with the 57 row 7. then the naked pair of 14 in column 9. Solo pair of 7 in row 2. Pair of 6 column 9. Pair 57 column 7 (solving column 7 row 3 is 1 and row 4 is 6) Only option for 7 is row 3 column 2. Triple 423 in row 4 (so you can cancel out all other 423 so all in ...
If it is a 1 then a 5 link chain (might be less, I haven't looked carefully) makes R7C4 a 6. If it's a 9 then a 3 link chain makes R2C1 a 6. If you like the NYT puzzles, but are puzzled by their hints, you can use a bookmarklet to open a puzzle from their site on SudokuExchange instead and get different hints.
I like to play regular Sudoku with automatic pencil marks. Makes easy puzzles like NYT Easy trivial, just filling in the singles, under 40 seconds. Medium and Hard are anywhere from 3-15 minutes, not often longer than that.
