To answer your very first question and assuming that you actually have the correct hulls, I have tried the load on page 174 in the Lyman 5th, using all Winchester components ( AA CF hulls) and 20 grains of Red Dot. I loaded a couple of boxes, it shot fine, but it had a bit more recoil than I wanted. Mark, thanks for the advice.
Uploaded new charts in OP to include 4th column, load and chrono data from the MEC 9000 and Automate. More consistent powder drops. Plus, the new charts are larger and easier to read!
These loads toss a traditional payload of 1-1/8 ounce shot and come to market in three versions: Light (~1145 fps), Heavy (~1200 fps) and Handicap (~1235 to 1255 fps). For now, we're going to concentrate on the Light load. We'll talk about the other two loads in future articles. Traditional shot size for these loads are 7-1/2's or 8's.
Red Dot is a perfect match for bullets from 200-grain wadcutters to 240-grain cast and swaged lead bullets in the .44 Magnum. Red Dot was originally intended as a shotshell powder for ⅞- to 1⅛-ounce target and field loads in the 12 gauge.
I used 17.5 Fed 209A and CCI 209M for Clays, Claydot, and Red Dot with same hull and DR XL-1. The Red Dot is a little dirty at 17.5 and my data shows that a Rem 209P goes up to 20.5/Red Dot with the WAA12SL. I use the load you are asking about but I use a hotter primer.
starting load. Watch for any signs of pressure, and consider any pressure warning signs as a potential maximum load. SHOTGUN POWDERS Sparta A fast burning, low density, double base, disc pro-pellant. Application similar to Red Dot and Titewad. Most suitable for shotgun cartridges with 24 to 28 gram loads and for some handgun cartridges. Clean Shot
Red Dot burns quicker and has a little bit more recoil than Green Dot. Most shooters prefer Red Dot for lighter loads, and Green Dot for heavier loads. Since Red Dot has a faster burn rate, you’ll need less of it to build up pressure, which means you’ll get more rounds per pound.
