Country Curtains was a retail home curtain business founded in 1956 by Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick in Whitman, Massachusetts. They started their business from their dining room table selling unbleached narrow muslin curtains. It was Jack’s idea to sell unbleached muslin ruffled curtains through the mail, reminiscent of their Vermont heritage.
The Ortons launched the original Vermont Country Store catalog business in Fall 1945. The couple opened the Vermont Country Store in 1946. The store was a replica of an original store that Vrest Orton's father had owned and operated in North Calais, Vermont. Mildred Orton co-ran the business until her retirement in 1978.

The Frank Lewis Covered Bridge in Woodstock was destroyed by Hurricane Irene on August 28, 2011. The Cedar Swamp Covered Bridge in Cornwall was destroyed by fire on September 10, 2016.
