I highlight my choice from the account inbox getting the blue box and the blue vertical line around my choice. Then I wait for it to open. That is -for the email in the lite blue box- to Open, in the larger portion of the screen on the Right. Nothing happens. Try again. Nothing happens. After 20 minutes of the same I give up.
For the last 2 or 3 days I can no longer open my email messages from my Outlook Inbox on my laptop, which has Windows 10. I can see the new/unread emails in the Inbox but when I click on any of them the Inbox goes blank and the message just won't open. Also, my name is no longer displayed in the top right corner of the Outlook page.

So if I were checking my Hotmail account from a PC, I would open my browser and go to https://outlook.live.com. I would log in using my Hotmail account and password then you can see the emails. If you are using a mail client like the Mail app in Windows 10, I would add that email account to the app then you can see those emails in that app.
This still doesn't correspond to my set-up, sorry. Unless I've missed something, I can't find a File tab. Thanks for the suggestions anyway. Have found a way of getting to inbox in one additional step rather than two, so I can live with that.
