Government jobs in NYC do not pay enough, what good is job security if the pay isn't up to par and very difficult to get when you're competing with 10x more applicants than normal jobs. While rents and cost of living keep going up, the salary at a public job doesn't go up that fast.

I've only had "9 to 5" jobs (which are really 9-6 with an hour for lunch, or 8:30-5 with 30 minutes for lunch, for example). I currently work 7:30-4:00 with 30 minutes for lunch. At my current place of employment, my shifts have changed based on need. I was 8:00-4:30 for the first year, then switched to 9:00-5:30 because my boss worked late.

I "resigned" from my job with local government and got a job with another state after that. The only job in between was one that was not in any way related and I didn't put it on my resume. Generally speaking, agencies (especially from local to state) don't talk to each other enough to know that kind of stuff.
No matter what, in most state/local/federal government jobs you will ALWAYS work an 8 hour shift and you will always have the weekends and holidays off. The exception are those who work in public safety and teachers. In some cases, state and federal government jobs even pays a higher starting wage than their equivalent private sector jobs.
