The number on my newer "work/business" phone is local to the area where I now live, and I keep thinking that this could be helpful in the sense of maintaining a local number even if it became a secondary personal number. I don't necessarily want to have it ring to my primary personal phone, though.
So the phone is not quite a paperweight. I put the SIM in a different phone, and was able to activate that phone. I then took the SIM out of the phone I activated, and put it in the "invalid" Motorola phone, and it has service now. But of course on the account the SIM is registered with the IMEI of the second phone.
Verizon uses a CDMA network, so if the SIM is for a GSM network it would not work. They are very different and not interchangeable. So call up Straight Talk and find out which network they are using. Also, you may be able go to their site and check if the phone will work on their network.
