Douglas Steele Llewelyn (born November 26, 1938) is an American television personality, best known as the original host of the court show The People's Court from 1981 to 1993. Previously a news reporter, Llewelyn has produced numerous television specials, including The Mystery of Al Capone's Vaults in 1986, and launched Judge Judy in 1996.
The first half of the year saw the show involved in a number of off-screen controversies: in January, show bosses axed original episode star Jeff Stewart (PC Reg Hollis), who at the time was the show's longest serving character. Stewart's family were Austin, and later Jaguar, car dealers and had built up a successful business. His father had been an amateur motorcycle racer, [2] and his brother Jimmy was a racing driver with a local reputation who drove for Ecurie Ecosse and competed in the 1953 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
