You know it's something Kathy is saying without needing "Kathy said" or "Kathy pouted" or whatever. Shuffle around "said" a bit, put it in the middle or other places sometimes. Not everything has to be the format "I have something to say," Jack said. My $0.02 of course. Reply reply.

This is mostly bad advice. "said" is not a weak word, it's a semi-invisible dialogue tag and the one you should be using most of the time together with asked. Mix in other tags only rarely. And you should never write "said angrily" or similar. The tone should be obvious to the reader from the words and actions.

Generally, though, I'd stick to the word "said" unless you're sure you have a better reason for it. You can always explain more about how something was said if you need to, but especially if you're speaking I'd recommend just using "said." 10. Share. Rorschach-X.

I just use said. It's just an indicator who said the words and most people don't consciously register it anymore while reading. If it's established who's talking, I often don't use anything at all. Just the lines of dialog and maybe some gestures or small actions thrown in for good measure.
