one big asterisk in OP's experience is that its from pre-2019, which is pre-profitability for Tesla so its entirely during Tesla's start up days. Things have changed a lot in the last 2 years in terms of crunch time on production line, company's "do or die" phase and maybe most importantly for individuals: pay.

Pay is similar. But a lot is factoring in as Total compensation is shifting towards Tesla a bit. And career outlook as well. I’d be paying about 300$ a month for benefits with Gm. Tesla covers that. Being salary with Gm I’m often working casual overtime of 10hrs a day.
Tesla actually pays pretty well now for controls positions, of course this is relative because of the 10-12 hours a day, sometimes 6 days a week work expectation. If you are looking in California you should be able to make 120-180k depending on experience level. If you factor in stock you could make over 200k per year potentially after first vest.
