Industrialization started in the 1930s in Mongolia (then the Mongolian People's Republic), with large-scale building construction starting in the 1960s-1970s, where the core of Ulaanbaatar was built. By the end of the communist era, Mongolia's tallest building was a 16-floor apartment building in Darkhan , constructed in 1985.
