I am using 7-Zip on Windows XP and whenever I download a .tar.gz file it takes me two steps to completely extract the file(s). I right-click on the example.tar.gz file and choose 7-Zip --> Extract Here from the context menu. I then take the resulting example.tar file and the right-click again and choose 7-Zip --> Extract Here from the context menu.
For 7-zip this means for example I will use the GUI and select the Ultra compression method (which can be easily beaten with some good command line switches), WinRar will be tested with max dictionary size and solid archiving etc. Programs are allowed to use a maximum of 800 MB memory and must finish the compression stage within 12h.
I'm playing around with 7-Zip to create a self-extracting archive (SFX) executable. I followed the documentation, but I wasn't able to get any close. I'm using the 7-Zip 32 bit and the 7-Zip extra 32 bit. Here is where I'm stuck first to create an SFX file you need to call the following script: copy /b 7zS.sfx + config.txt + archive.7z archive.exe
I am looking to use the command line 7-Zip to unzip a folder. I have a file, say example.zip and want to unzip the contents of the file into a folder called example.
7-Zip has multiple .exe files, which one do I use? Every so often I would forget which way round these were, or would try and use one of the .exe's for the wrong purpose, so thought I would get to the bottom of it and then share in case anyone else is curious about the different .exe's.
This doesn't make much sense IMO. 7-Zip ignores extensions, it looks at file structure only. ZIP and RAR are two completely different formats and changing extension won't fix the file or faulty algo. –
If you have a listfile, 7-Zip will not store paths if the files to be archived do not share a single top-level directory. For example if you have Input.txt containing the following: C:\path to\file1.ext D:\path to\file1.ext E:\path to\file1.ext

If you look at the 7-zip FAQ, it states that newer versions of 7z may have worse performance than older versions in some circumstances. Read the FAQ for more detail, but in short use the 'qs' in Parameters field in the GUI or use -mqs in the command line version to use the old sort by file extension method.
