    Replied on July 2, 2016. Report abuse. I had this same problem with Word 2016 Mac. For the first time in years I had a document I where I needed to use the backslash key. The screen showed the Yen symbol rather than the backslash. Lots of web digging and followed a down a lot of fruitless rabbit holes (Word preferences, Keyboard preferences, etc.).

    We have someone who had to change his screen language to Japanese, for some reason, then, went to change it back, and had some problems. Seems some of the Japanese characters got stuck.     Check that the Primary editing language is set to something other than Japanese. In Windows, make sure your Language and Keyboard are both set to the same language as your Primary editing language. You should be able to switch this on the Taskbar. Reopen the presentation, the yen symbols should be backslashes.
