UCLA prides itself on the fact that nearly a third of its undergraduate students will be the first in their families to earn a four-year college degree. Still, navigating the university experience can be a challenge for many first-generation students, and particularly for those in STEM fields, where they remain widely underrepresented.
Miguel García-Garibay was appointed dean of physical sciences in May 2016, after four years as chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry, and became Senior Dean of the UCLA College in November 2022. He has been a faculty member in the department since 1992.
College Leadership. The five deans of the UCLA College lead their respective divisions and share responsibility for issues and functions across the entire College. Shared governance is implemented through the Faculty Executive Committee. External relations and College Communications are housed in the Office of College Development.
