Founded in 1897 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the footwear company moved to Oregon in 2001 where its Danner Boots subsidiary was based. In 2012, the company, which previously had been publicly traded, was bought by Japanese-based ABC-Mart .
The variety stores, restaurants and frame and craft stores were sold off in 1985 to executive Jay Danner in an effort to save the 3-D discount chain. The new company was called Danner Brothers Co. 3-D stood for "Danner's Discount Department Store". In 1986, 3D Discount had 35 locations throughout Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.
In July 2014, White's Boots was sold to LaCrosse Footwear of Portland, Oregon, which also owns Danner Boots. LaCrosse Footwear's chief financial officer, Kirk Layton, cited the made-in-America heritage of White's Boots as a motivating factor for the buyout.
