On May 10, 1899, Governor Joseph D. Sayers approved a bill establishing Southwest Texas State Normal School in San Marcos. On October 16, 1899, the San Marcos mayor and city council approved the transfer of Chautauqua Hill to the state for the normal school.

The Center for the Study of the Southwest collaborates with numerous faculty and staff members across the university to offer broad multidisciplinary and multicultural content for our students.
