the mall of america is 4.2 million square feet the meadowlands will be 4.5 million. the west edmonton mall well still be the largest in north america and there are several malls in china and one in dubai that are also much larger then 4.5 million square feet. athough the mall of america is not the largest in the world, it has by the most visitors by a long shot with aroung 40 million a year.
That said, in recent years Mall of America has been trying to obtain more local stores along with higher-end, luxury stores but it still lacks in this department. However, it offers numerous attractions not present at your standard mall such as an amusement park, mini-golf course, huge Lego store, and aquarium.

Mall of America was NEVER the world's largest mall. West Edmonton Mall, which was built in the early 1980s by the same people who built Mall of America, dwarfs MoA. WEM has about 800+ stores to MoA's 500 or so. In terms of retail square footage, WEM is around 3.8 million to MoA's 2.8 million. And WEM isn't even the world's largest mall anymore.
I believe there both really close but MoA winning the game by a field goal in over time lol. For me i have more fun at Mall of America (Dont do any of the kid stuff) However i did enjoy the Casino at West Edmonton.
