Nick, AAC provides better audio quality than MP3 if you use the same bitrates. Or, you can get the same audio quality as MP3 with a lower bitrate. I've read some independent tests that use blind testing with a large audience claiming that AAC at 128 kbps is about the same quality as MP3 encoded at 192 kbps.

  3. So a 4 minute song will be approximately 40 MB. An Apple Lossless file of this song will be about half that, say 20 MB. An MP3 or AAC of the same song will be about 1 MB per minute of song, so roughly 4 MB. If you want compatibility go with 160 Kbps MP3. If you want better quality and file size go with 128 Kbps AAC.

  4. Apple Music & iTunes AAC 256kbps: vs :AAC 320kbps ripped and converted from CD using iTunes on Mac & iMac. All music streamed and bought from the iTunes Store are at AAC 256kbps while when ripping a CD from a computer and then choosing a audio format and quality, there’s a option where if u don’t rip it to original CD sound quality, you can choose to convert it to AAC format from the Mac ...

  5. Thanks! I misspoke slightly before - AIFF is uncompressed lossless* - essentially a container for WAV data - whereas Apple Lossless (also known as ALAC) is a compressed lossless encoding. They are identical in terms of audio quality, but the file sizes for ALAC will, in general, be smaller than those for AIFF.

Level 3. 625 points. MP3 is a fairly old file type, while AAC and WMA are more modern. AAC is said to have higher quality than MP3, but is not compatible with some players and/or programs. WMA is a very widely-adopted format, and has larger file sizes than AAC and MP3, so many programs/players will be able to use it, but maybe not store as many ...

  8. I am trying to get a little deeper into the differences between Apple Lossless and the AAC Encoder for importing my music. I use iTunes and a Windows 10 PC. I import a lot of music and I used to import using mp3 encoder then I came across some info in the past that the AAC encoder was the way to go for better quality sound.

  9. 128 kbps is a good comprimise of size and quality. iTunes allow you to compress to greater of less than 128. AAC is generally better than equivalent bit rate MP3. At 128 Kbps AAC, most of the "killer samples" at hydrogenaudio.org are transparent to me. Not so with 160 Kbps LAME MP3 and even 192 Kbps.

  10. 11 points. Audio Format: AAC vs ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). Which is better? Hi I’m trying to figure out which iTunes Music Format I should use to import songs from a CD into my iTunes Library on my 2013 MacBook Air. There are 5 Music Formats to choose from in the iTunes Setting Preference such as the other 3 formats known as AIFF, MP3 ...

  11. BOTH are compresseds formats and theres pros and cons to both really. AAC. AAC stands for "Advanced Audio Coding" Its mainly supported by apple and is based on MPEG-4. The Pro to this format is it can be compressed to a smaller size than MP3 without loosing sound quality. You can have an MP3 at 160kbps (Larger) equal to AAC at 128kbps (Smaller).
